Special Weather Statement issued September 11 at 2:14PM PDT by NWS Spokane WA
AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Panhandle; Central Panhandle Mountains
DESCRIPTION: At 213 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 9 miles south of Clark Fork to 12 miles northeast of Bovill. Movement was northwest at 15 mph. HAZARD...Winds in excess of 30 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Kellogg, Pinehurst, Osburn, Smelterville, Wardner, Jordan Creek Campground, Magee Ranger Station, Kingston, Clarkia, Huckleberry Campground, Silver Mountain, Cataldo, and Calder. This includes Interstate 90 in Idaho between mile markers 41 and 59.
INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service. Persons in campgrounds should consider seeking sturdy shelter until these storms pass.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or
clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind.
As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their
weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.
Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures,
despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles
a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.
In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly
in the Midwest and eastern regions.
While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form
under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds
warn that severe weather is close.
