DESCRIPTION: At 557 AM EST, a snow squall was located along a line extending from 15 miles southeast of Bay View to Tabb to near Burrowsville. Movement was southeast at 55 mph. Winds in excess of 30 mph, reduced visibility, and a quick dusting up to a half of an inch of snow are possible with this squall. This squall will be near... Newport News, Hampton, Surry, Langley AFB, Patrick Henry Field, Jamestown, Grand View, Fort Eustis, Scotland, and Tabb around 600 AM EST. Christopher Newport University, Northampton, Buckroe Beach, and Beaconsdale around 605 AM EST. Hampton University and Fort Monroe around 610 AM EST. Ocean View and Norfolk around 615 AM EST. Virginia Beach, Smithfield, Rescue, and Norfolk NAS around 620 AM EST. Portsmouth and Norfolk International around 625 AM EST. Old Dominion University, Virginia Wesleyan University, Suffolk, and Norview around 630 AM EST. Downtown Norfolk, Norfolk State University, Ghent, and Crittenden around 635 AM EST. Other locations impacted by this squall include South Norfolk, Rudee Heights, Carrollton, Portlock, Lackey, Chippokes State Park, Beulah, Moon, Longview, and Laban. Use extra caution if you must travel into or through this dangerous snow squall. Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads are likely to lead to accidents. Consider delaying travel until the squall passes your location.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless, smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud, because it is thicker.

Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
