DESCRIPTION: ...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM TO 7 PM CST THURSDAY FOR STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE FAR SOUTHERN TEXAS PANHANDLE, NORTHERN SOUTH PLAINS, AND NORTHERN ROLLING PLAINS... ...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING FOR STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE FAR SOUTHWESTERN TEXAS PANHANDLE, SOUTH PLAINS, AND EASTERN ROLLING PLAINS... The National Weather Service in Lubbock has issued a Red Flag Warning, which is in effect from 10 AM to 7 PM CST Thursday. a Fire Weather Watch has also been issued. This Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Friday morning through Friday evening. * Timing...For today, 11 AM until 7 PM today for the Red Flag Warning. For Thursday, 10 AM until 7 PM for the Red Flag Warning. For the Fire Weather Watch, late Friday morning through the evening. * Wind...For today, Southwest at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph. For Thursday, West to northwest at 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph. For Friday, West at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. * Humidity...For today and Thursday, as low as 10 percent. For Friday, as low as 12 percent. * Fuels...Dry. * Impacts...Any fires that develop can spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is discouraged.

A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Sleet is a form of precipitation in which small ice pellets are the primary
components. These ice pellets are smaller and more translucent than hailstones,
and harder than graupel. Sleet is caused by specific atmospheric conditions and
therefore typically doesn't last for extended periods of time.
The condition which leads to sleet formation requires a warmer body of air to be
wedged in between two sub-freezing bodies of air. When snow falls through a warmer
layer of air it melts, and as it falls through the next sub-freezing body of air
it freezes again, forming ice pellets known as sleet. In some cases, water
droplets don't have time to freeze before reaching the surface and the result is
freezing rain.

Stratocumulus clouds are similar to altocumulus clouds in their
fluffy appearance, but have a slightly darker shade due to their additional mass.
A good way to distinguish the two cloud types is to hold your hand out and measure
the size of an individual cloud; if it is the size of your thumb it is generally
an altocumulus cloud, if it is the size of your hand it is generally a
stratocumulus cloud.
It is uncommon for stratocumulus clouds to produce precipitation, but if they do
it is usually a light rain or snow.
