DESCRIPTION: SVRPSR The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a * Severe Thunderstorm Warning for... Northwestern Imperial County in southeastern California... * Until 400 PM PDT. * At 312 PM PDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 12 miles west of Westmorland, or 15 miles southeast of Salton City, moving northwest at 25 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. * Locations impacted include... Salton City and Winona. This includes the following highways... CA Route 78 between mile markers 1 and 13. CA Route 86 between mile markers 33 and 58.
INSTRUCTION: For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Precipitation in the form of water droplets is called rain.

Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of
cities is 30% greater.
