AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Outer Banks
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 9 above expected. For the Wind Advisory, northwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. For the Extreme Cold Watch, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 1 below possible. * WHERE...Northern Outer Banks. * WHEN...For the Cold Weather Advisory, from 6 AM to 9 PM EST Saturday. For the Wind Advisory, from 6 AM Saturday to 5 AM EST Sunday. For the Extreme Cold Watch, from Saturday evening through Sunday morning. * IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes.
INSTRUCTION: Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

Similar to cirrocumulus clouds, altocumulus clouds are
characterized by cloud patches. They are distinguished by larger cloudlets
than cirrocumulus clouds but are still smaller than stratocumulus clouds.
Altocumulus clouds most commonly form in middle altitudes (between 2 and 5 km)
and may resemble, at times, the shape of a flying saucer.
These uncommon formations, called altocumulus lenticularis, are created by uplift
in the atmosphere and are most often seen in close proximity to mountains.

Cirrocumulus clouds form at high altitudes (usually around 5 km)
and have distinguishing characteristics displayed in a fine layer of
small cloud patches. These small cloud patches are sometimes referred to as
"cloudlets" in relation to the whole cloud formation.
Cirrocumulus clouds are formed from ice crystals and water droplets. Often, the
water droplets in the cloud freeze into ice crystals and the cloud becomes a
cirrostratus cloud. Because of this common occurrence, cirrocumulus cloud
formations generally pass rapidly.
