AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Fairfield; Northern New Haven; Northern Middlesex; Northern New London; Southern Fairfield; Southern New Haven; Southern Middlesex; Southern New London; Putnam; Northern Westchester; Southern Westchester; Northwest Suffolk; Northeast Suffolk; Southwest Suffolk; Southeast Suffolk; Northern Nassau; Southern Nassau
DESCRIPTION: Snow continues to move through portions of the region. It is light to locally moderate, and most steady across Southern Connecticut and much of Long Island. This will continue into this morning before 830 AM. While mostly light, the snow will likely lead to some minor accumulations of mostly less than an inch over the next few hours. Visibilities will also be reduced to near 1 to 3 miles within the snow at times with occasional reductions in visibility to near 1/2 mile. Slippery conditions can be expected where any snow sticks to the surface. Motorists should proceed with extra caution and drive extra carefully, allowing for more spacing between vehicles.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or
clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind.
As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their
weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.
Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures,
despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles
a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.
In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly
in the Midwest and eastern regions.
While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form
under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds
warn that severe weather is close.
