DESCRIPTION: SVRTFX The National Weather Service in Great Falls has issued a * Severe Thunderstorm Warning for... Northeastern Liberty County in north central Montana... Western Hill County in north central Montana... Northern Chouteau County in north central Montana... * Until 145 AM MDT. * At 1225 AM MDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 11 miles northwest of Joplin to 11 miles north of Inverness to Gildford, moving north at 30 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE...Radar indicated, with surface observations of 55 mph 11 miles south of Rudyard. IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. * Locations impacted include... Joplin, Inverness, Gildford, Hingham, Rudyard, Simpson, and Kremlin.

INSTRUCTION: For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Winds may arrive before rain does, and winds may linger for an extended period of time after the rain ends as well. Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with these storms. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind. As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.

Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures, despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.

In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly in the Midwest and eastern regions.

While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds warn that severe weather is close.
